around 9:30, ten. those protestors and the counter protestors getting into it in the middle of an intersection, throwing water bottles at aech ear, chanting, throwing all kienlds of projectiles. at one point there were some smoke bombs, some what appeared to be tear gas being lobd from one side to the other. things got out of hand. eventually police did step in, cleared out the park, cleared out all of the protestors and as the counter protestors were making their way in this area, that incident with the car plowing into the crowd occurred. and we had, of course, 19 people injured, one person killed. and from what we re hearing from hospital officials, that wasn t the extent of everything that happened today. really there was a total of 35 people injured today because there were those clashes back at the park. so they have been dealing with all of that. and then we re hearing about this voo state police helicopter
smoke bombs going off and pepper spray used by both sides. but that does not compare to the violence that unfolded behind me as you have seen the video of that car plowing into a group of counterprotesters. we do not yet know the result of that collision. as you said the mayor has tweeted there s one life lost. he said that i m heartbroken that a life has been lost here. i urge people of goodwill to go home. we are awaiting for confirmation from the virginia police to learn of the scenario there. i spoke with one eyewitness who saw a woman in serious condition being given cpr. the aclu showed us other victims being treated at the scene. very heart breaking day here in charlottesville for many people of this community who i have seen shout at protesters on both sides to go home. to let this city be. and are people going home? what is the scene there right now? looks much calmer behind you.
the loss of life ther now, as important as what happened in charlottesville is politically, we ve got to remind ourselves, people died this weekend. two members of the virginia state police were killed after their held consistenter went down southwest of charlottesville. they were helping law enforcement monitor things from the sky. lieutenant hj cull lesson and trooper pilot burke bates were both married with two kids each. called their deaths a tremendous loss to their agency and to the commonwealth. and then there is the young woman we mentioned earlier, the one killed by a car plowing through a crowd of counterprotestors. her name was heather highier. she loved her dog. her mother described her like this. she was a very brave person. at times it was scarey as a mom to know how brave she was, but
