CarMax Rolls Out Presale Test Drives, Expands Guarantee The used-car chain previously offered a seven-day return policy on used cars, but that’s getting to be less of a competitive advantage as more big chains ramp up their used-car operations.
With competition from franchised new-car dealers and used-only dealers heating up in the used-car space, CarMax rolls out 24-hour test drives before the sale and a 30-day, money-back guarantee on used cars and trucks after the sale.
“We’ll keep raising the bar, and we’ll see who’s able to follow,” says Jim Lyski, CarMax chief marketing officer. CarMax calls its new policies the “Love Your Car Guarantee.”

Stating that the program allows customers to experience a day in their life with a new ride, CarMax launched a new offering in which customers can take 24‐hour test drives before committing to purchase.
CarMax said the program, called the “Love Your Car Guarantee,” provides increased peace of mind and buyer confidence.
CarMax has also extended its seven‐day money back guarantee to 30 days. The company is allowing customers 30 days to return the car for any reason for a full refund up to 1,500 miles.
