USNS Carson City arrives in Port Sudan

The US Military Sealift Command (MSC) expeditionary fast transport ship USNS Carson City (EPF 7) arrived in Port Sudan, Sudan on 24 February in the first US Navy ship visit to Sudan since the creation of US Africa Command. The port visit highlights US engagement that strives to build a partnership with the Sudanese Armed Forces, the US Navy said. “We are honoured to work with our Sudanese partners in the enhancement of maritime security,” said Captain Frank Okata, commodore, Military Sealift Command Europe and Africa and Commander, Task Force 63. Carson City’s visit follows the visit by US Africa Command’s Deputy Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, Ambassador Andrew Young, and Director of Intelligence, Rear Admiral Heidi Berg, between 25 and 27 January, “which fostered cooperative engagement and expanded partnership development”.

The series of naval exercises with the Tunisian Navy focused on developing both nations’ ability to conduct maritime security operations in the Mediterranean, further enhancing cooperation between US and Tunisian forces in support of shared security goals, the US military said. “It is important to work alongside our partners in the Mediterranean to improve our interoperability and teamwork,” said Captain Frank Okata, Commodore Military Sealift Command Europe and Africa and Commander, Task Force 63. “Conducting training exercises together with countries like Tunisia contributes to a more secure and stable region.”
