On Monday, the main mast of a historic windjammer named the Grace Bailey splintered and fell onto the deck. Emily Mecklenburg, a local doctor and passenger aboard, died from her injuries.

With warm weather in the forecast, the U.S. Coast Guard is strongly urging people to use extreme caution when near the ice.
They say there has been an increase in activity on the ice this year, particularly in the Straits of Mackinac because of the blue ice. The Coast Guard wants to make clear, right now,
no ice is safe ice.
“Ice conditions are always changing and are very difficult to determine,” said Captain Amy Florentino, Deputy Sector Commander. “In many locations, the ice conditions are becoming extremely dangerous, and we urge everyone to heed warnings from local authorities to avoid placing themselves at risk.”
