speaker kevin mccarthy will grant their request for access to 44,000 hours of capitol security footage from the january 6th insurrection. this is the same footage that mccarthy already exclusively shared with fox news s tucker carlson. it conspiracy theorist who has repeatedly downplayed and denied the truth about january 6th. according to, axios carlson s tv producers were on capitol hill last week to begin reviewing the footage, which includes multiple camera angles from all over capitol grounds. carlson has yet to air the footage, but he is already teasing what he claims his producers have found. our producers, some of our smartest producers, have been there looking at this stuff and trying to figure what it means and how it contradicts or not the story that we ve been told more than two years. we think already that in some ways it does contradict that story. joining me now is congressman steve cohen. a member of the house judiciary
julie tsirkin. julie, thank you for being here. take us through how we got to this point and why nbc news is calling for the video to be released to all news agencies? well, jonathan, to understand how we got to this point you have to remember this in the context of this congress because this according to my sources also has to do with those concessions that kevin mccarthy made to the far-right members of his party in order to get that speakership gavel nearly a month ago. this now fast forward to monday, we heard from top across in himself that he and his team now have possession of 44,000 hours of capitol security footage. you have to realize that this is every county camera in this complex, of what happened on january six. escape routes, different angles that members, including speaker pelosi and vice president pratt pence were assured out of this building. this is sensitive footage. much of a never viewed before by the public. and this is how tucker carlson framed it on his show
welcome back. joining us now with a look at axios a.m. alexis mccammond. good morning. what s the one big thing today. good morning, jonathan. as you just mentioned speaker kevin mccarthy is making a pretty big gamble by reopening and relitigating what happened on january 6th. as axios first reported he has entrusted tucker carlson of fox news to review thousands of hours of capitol security footage of that day. enlisting these conservative figures to share with the american people the republican people s view of what happened on january 6th. this matters for a number of reasons. another example of how he s placating to the far right of his party like marjorie taylor
their legal bills. perhaps that s because one of them was the chairman of the republican party in georgia. there s one other that goes with it in washington. it concerns republican speaker of the house kevin mccarthy. speaker mccarthy has decided to hand over all the capitol security footage from the january 6th attack. 41,000 hours of footage. he s handed it all over to the fox news channel which has devoted hours and hours and hours of air time to conspiracy theories about january 6th being a liberal deep state plot that only seemed like it was caused by trump supporters, but really, it was the liberals. so the speaker of the house just gave them all the security camera footage from the actual capitol for them to play with, to see what they can do. here you go, fox news prime time. hopefully you can use this official government material to concoct an alternate narrative to give us a more convenient
didn t have much confidence in biden s attorneys. let me ask you another question because we re learning all these side deals that kevin mccarthy made to get the speakership. republican congressman matt gaetz said he promised he he would release all the capitol security footage from january 6th. what do you make of that deal? as someone who has seen the footage, presumably all of it? do you think it should be released? is there any issue with it? on the oversight committee, and i think chairman comer stated this, we re interested in transparency. america needs absolute transparency to everything speaker mccarthy gave away to the raven rampaging right-wing faction of the freedom caucus to assembling a majority after all the ballots we saw on the house floor. the first thing they did was to give a huge gift to millionaire tax cheats by undermining irs enforcement. what about the footage though?
