In response to DA parliamentary questions, the Western Cape Education Department has revealed that a further nine schools in the province will benefit from the deployment of specially-trained School Resource Officers (SROs) from July. Working in some of the most at-risk schools in the province, these officers form a key component of the WCED’s plans to ensure a safe learning environment for all learners in the Western Cape. The DA in the Western Cape is overjoyed to note the Western Cape Education Department’s launch of its #BackOnTrack campaign, which seeks to address learning losses during the Covid-19 lockdowns. It has become clear that more intervention is needed to address the affects of the pandemic on the education of our children, and this campaign sees the WCED set aside R1.2 billion over the next three years to recover lost teaching time. At yesterday’s launch, Minister David Maynier announced that 126 000 learners at 333 schools would receive targeted support from his department. This is in addition to the 1 100 schools which have already received specialised support from the WCED in order to counteract learning losses. Crucially, support is now being given to these schools across all phases, as it has become apparent that older learners are in need. In addition to all foundation phase Grades, Grades 4, 7, 8, 10 and 12 will be targeted for support.
The DA in the Western Cape is shocked to learn of the passing of former politician and community activist Loyiso Nkohla, who was shot dead today. The passing of such a distinctive and passionate voice is profoundly tragic, and the circumstances of Mr. Nkohla’s death are troubling. While details are still emerging, it appears that Nkohla was gunned down soon after addressing community meeting at Philippi Railway Station. Shockingly, there have been reports that the assassination took place close to the premises of the recently-shuttered Browns Farm satellite SAPS station. If these reports are true, then they raise serious questions about the SAPS’s capacity to provide protection to citizens who need it most.\
