Cape Fear Regional Theatre is in its 59th year and serves about 49,000 people a year.
The building was originally a movie theater, with its last renovation in 1988. Some of the new renovations, such as the seats and the sound system, were added in order to address complaints from patrons, according to Cape Fear Regional Theater artistic director Mary Kate Burke.
The seats were 19 inches wide and will now increase to between 21 and 24 inches wide. The space between viewers knees and the back of the next chairs will now increase to 36 and 37 inches. There will also be new flooring and new carpets.
