Singapore nightclub Canvas Club closes, citing financial difficulties due to the pandemic

A statement was posted on the club’s Facebook page yesterday evening (Feb 10). “It is indeed sad to say that we have to announce the curtain call for this amazing nightlife journey with you,” co-owners Roy Ng and Mahen Nathan wrote. “It wasn’t easy, and our team has been battling back and forth with the pandemic to keep things afloat. We had that little ray of hope of operating again, but as our funds were almost depleted after holding on for 9 months we had to face reality and move on – to learn, and accept the changes, and embrace it.”

During school and college, his friends would ask him to entertain them and Sapkota, who grew up watching Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams, would usually comply. His humour, mostly, would be explicit and dark, something his close friends enjoyed. But, with Nepali comedy still stuck in skits and sitcoms, Sapkota knew that his type of comedy would not be accepted. “Being funny was my thing,” says Sapkota. “But, back when, I was in my late teens and early 20s, Nepal didn’t have a space for the comedy that I did. I could make an explicit joke about anything. And, I knew that it wouldn’t be taken as tongue in cheek. This is why I refrained from doing it.”
