The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has ordered commanders and personnel to desist from further commenting on the issue of a detained Corporal, Ruth Ogunleye who accused some senior army officers of sexual harassment. SaharaReporters had reported that Ogunleye, a female soldier of the Nigerian Army, had in a viral video accused two colonels and a Brigadier-General of sexual harassment, intimidation and threat to life. On January 16, SaharaReporters reported that the female soldier had been arrested and flown to Abuja from Lagos.
Nigerian women affairs minister, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, has announced that she paid a visit to Ruth Ogunleye, a female soldier who recently complained in the viral video about sexual harassment in the military. The minister said she was at the facility where Ruth was undergoing rehabilitation earlier this week. In a post on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Ohanenye said, “Aside from the noticeable improvement from my last visit to her, she was in high spirits and we interacted cordially.”
Two civil society organisations - Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Center (RULAAC) and Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) - have called for the immediate release of detained Corporal Ruth Ogunleye who accused some senior army officers of sexual harassment. The groups in a joint statement signed by RULAAC Executive Director, Okechuwu Nwanguma and CRRAN President, Olu Omotayo Esq, faulted the claim by the Nigerian Army that the female soldier had not officially exhausted the available institutionalised channels before going on the social media.
