The extra government money comes from the Covid-19 response fund and once opened – in late 2023 – the site will also provide transitional housing for 16-to-24 years olds, who will be given social support from qualified, live-in staff. Most will stay from three to 18 months at a time, providing they are involved in formal education or actively looking for work. Youth Hub Trust chairwoman Dame Sue Bagshaw said the cash will help meet any extra costs as a result of Covid-19 or global supply delays.

Once opened, Christchurch Youth Hub will include accommodation, training opportunities and support services. “We’re just thrilled. Especially all the organisations, it s given them a bit more certainty, in terms of their planning,” she said.
