Valentine’s Day, while not considered a public holiday, is celebrated by 81 per cent of Canadians. Valentine’s Day grew in popularity in England in the 1700s when people there started to send out cards to their sweethearts. Most Victorians loved the notion of courtly love and would send each other elaborate cards and gifts to mark the day. Canadians have been celebrating this day since the middle of the 19th century.
