A Carolina Christmas: Biltmore welcomes you to stay and play
CR Rae
The Vanderbilt family probably never realized how much joy their home, Biltmore, would bring to families from near and far at Christmas.
The former home of George and Edith Vanderbilt is magic any time of the year. However, Christmas in this more-than-130-year-old home is magnificent.
The home was built in 1889 and is a French Renaissance chateau with 250 rooms. It took 1,000 craftsmen working together six days a week to complete the home over six years.
The home consists of four acres of floor space and includes 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces that takes a lot of decorating. The house first opened for visitors in 1930 with the purpose to help increase tourism during the Great Depression.

Celebrating Christmas during the COVID-19 pandemic requires masks, even if it didn t require them when settlers arrived in Appalachia.
However, people still wore them at the Museum of Appalachia s Candlelight Christmas event. During the event, people experienced the history of East Tennessee firsthand by touring the museum s Pioneer Village and watching demonstrations on blacksmithing, sorghum making and apple butter churning.
The Pioneer Village was decorated for the holidays, helping to lift visitor s spirits and inspire Christmas cheer.
Admittedly, as holiday seasons go, this oneâs a real lump of coal. In 2020, the most wonderful time of the year will be less about spreading holiday cheer (now known as âdropletsâ) with friends and family than sheltering in place and rocking (slowly back and forth) around the Christmas tree. Maybe some light wassailing.
We may be virtually snowed in, but that doesnât mean you canât virtually go out. Decemberâs online musical offerings are enough to fill in just about every gap left by your canceled plans. Plus you can have nog. (Also we may be stuck this way for a while, so consider pinging Santa for some new headphones.) Hereâs what Iâll be streaming this month.
