School District Seeks Public Input on School Calendars SHARE ON: Photography by Tim Mossholder The Cowichan Valley School District wants to hear from you as it plans a new three-year calendar for schools in the valley. The Board is working on its school calendar for the 2021 to 2024 school years. Board Chair Candace Spilsbury says the calendars guide overall planning for each school year and “are incredibly important documents.” Spilsbury says they appreciate community feedback and encourage people to be heard through our survey. The district is required to make the proposed school calendar available for public feedback at least one month before submitting it to the Ministry.

Man arrested for arson at Duncan schools

  VICTORIA RCMP have arrested a Duncan man for two suspicious fires that broke out at local elementary schools earlier this month. North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP say that a 36-year-old Duncan man has been arrested for arsons that took place at Drinkwater Elementary School on Jan. 11 and at Ecole Mount Prevost on Jan. 15. The two fires forced both schools to close for the day as damage was assessed and police and fire investigators examined the scene. Mounties say the suspect was arrested on Jan. 19. He has since been released on a number of conditions, including a ban on being within 200 metres of a school, a prohibition on possessing anything capable of starting a fire and requirement to check in with adult probation.

Duncan Man Arrested for Setting Fires at Schools SHARE ON: The RCMP have arrested a Duncan man in connection with last week’s fires at two schools in North Cowichan. The North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP says a 36-year old man is facing charges related to the fires outside Drinkwater Elementary School on January 11, and Ecole Mount Prevost on January 15th. In both incidents, the damage was minor but classes had to be cancelled at the schools for one day. After several days of investigation, a suspect was identified, and was arrested on January 19. School District 79 Chair Candace Spilsbury says they are “very grateful for the quick work and through investigation” by the RCMP.

Another school in Duncan closed due to suspicious fire

  VICTORIA A second suspicious fire in the Cowichan Valley area cancelled classes at an elementary school on Friday. The fire was discovered near École Mount Prevost in Duncan around 7:10 a.m. by a neighbour of the school. The flames were quickly extinguished by the North Cowichan Fire Department and Mounties. The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and specialized fire investigators are now looking into the incident. It s the second time this week that a suspicious fire closed a school in Duncan. On Monday, all classes at Drinkwater Elementary were cancelled for the day after a fire filled the building’s halls and classrooms with smoke.
