The Springfield area remains a tinderbox for COVID-19 infection risk, the leader of a key southwest Missouri health care system said Tuesday, even as new temporary nurses, respiratory therapists and others are on their way to help share the load of caring for people infected by Missouri s summertime Delta variant surge.

Edwards said Springfield-area hospitals are contending with a flood of new COVID infections, even as non-COVID care is back to something like normal levels.
