Panama Canal
Panama Canal
Vital and Vulnerable, it is Being Refortified by U. S. at Huge Cost
THE strategical importance of the Panama Canal, not only to the United States but to the British Empire and the whole world, is, according to an article in The Empire Review, emphasized by the present war. The article continues: It is rapidly being refortified by the United States at a total cost of £120,000,000. This once fever-stricken strip of land, now so vital and yet so vulnerable, is essential to the defense of the United States and international trade, especially as regards speeding overseas war supplies to Britain and France. It is, in fact, a focal point of our Empire sea communications and is near our West Indies naval station.
