Canadian Blood Services was created 23 years ago in response to the scandal, and has steadily rebuilt confidence in the country’s blood system, he said.
“We believe that Canada can effectively prepare for the next pandemic by establishing a world-class vaccination system based on this model as well,” Sher argued.
It’s possible, Wilson added, that taking responsibility for immunization away from government might increase the confidence of vaccine sceptics. “If it’s an independent, arm’s-length organization, it can take out some of the rhetoric,” he said.
Between pandemics, Wilson said, the immunization service would be responsible for co-ordinating and delivering childhood vaccines, flu and other adult immunizations.
