Canada will welcome 485,000 permanent residents next year and 500,000 in 2025 as the country faces an ageing population and labour shortages in key sectors and is seeking to spur growth with the help of new qualified professionals.
Canada saw 437,120 permanent residents (PRs) across the country in 2022..It is second year in a row that the country exceeded its stated immigration target according to the 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan.
Canada met its target of granting 401,000 foreigners permanent residency in 2021 by focusing its efforts on temporary residents already in the country, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said on Thursday.

Canada has announced a time-limited innovative pathway to permanent residence for over 90,000 essential workers and international graduates who are already in Canada and actively contributing to Canada’s economy. This will grant permanent status to temporary workers employed in hospitals and long-term care homes and on the frontlines of other essential sectors, as well as international graduates who are driving the economy of tomorrow, to help accelerate the country’s economic recovery.
Starting May 6, applications to the below streams will be accepted and will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until the application limit has been reached. Eligibility criteria are available on the Government of Canada website.
