The Now-Lit Fuse of Thermonuclear War?
Moderator’s Opening Remarks
Harley Schlanger moderated the first panel of the
May 8 conference, which began at 9:00 a.m. EDT. Schlanger serves on the Board of the Schiller Institute. For 20 years he was a national spokesman for Lyndon
LaRouche.
Welcome to the Schiller Institute conference, “The Moral Collapse of the Trans-Atlantic World Cries Out for a New Paradigm.” I’m Harley Schlanger, and I will moderate the first panel, which is entitled “The March of Folly: Can Mankind Still Extinguish the Now-Lit Fuse of Thermonuclear War?”
As we meet, the survival of the human race is imperiled as perhaps never before. We face the danger of a new world war, including the possible use of nuclear weapons; of a systemic breakdown of the real physical economy, which keeps more than 7-plus billion people alive, and the collapse of which is bringing with it famine and an out-of-control pandemic.
Is Going to Survive …
May 9 “It seems to me that if mankind is going to survive or not as a species, if we are going to go extinct or not, really depends on whether we can overcome being victimized by imperial thinking divide and conquer and let ourselves be in this camp, hostile to that other camp. Or can we somehow evoke in ourselves and in others a quality of the inner self-development, in cohesion with the lawfulness of the creation of the universe?

I greet all of you, wherever you may be around the world.
I’m telling you that we are conducting this Schiller Institute conference with an urgent appeal to as many people as possible, to help to change the direction in which the political situation is going right now. Because we are on a course which, in a very short period of time much shorter than anybody is probably realizing we are on a course of potential extinction of civilization.
