Look out Tiger King, as the municipalities in Hastings County now have some clarity for setting by-laws related to exotic animals. This happened during discussions at Thursday’s meeting of Hastings County Council. Ontario is the only province federally that does not have any required legislation regulating and managing exotic animals.
Municipalities can handle some of this through its Planning Act, but there are still loopholes and lapses that don’t ensure the health and safety of the public or the animals.
Hastings County Planning staff worked with other agencies that are involved with these animals and by-laws, including the Ontario SPCA, as well as World Animal Protection. Reports indicate that based on information and assistance provided by these groups and from reviewing other by-laws, a new template by-law has been prepared.
