When sheridan is told that he has to use the fifth corps as his support led by general warren, that order is instantly followed up by general grant with if you have any problems with the Corps Commander relieve him of one of the Division Commanders which you would say pretty much puts the writing on the wall that warren is not going to make it through the battle.
