April 7, 1961, seems long ago to most people. For Anna Flowers, it is a date she will never forget.
One that date, her husband, Edward Bauman, and her two younger brothers, Howard Richard (aka Dick) and Robert Vroman, drowned in a Sherman Township lake.
Ed was 18 and about to become a father, Dick was 16 and Bobby, 13. They went spearing that Friday night at Quail Lake, with Larry Lung. Only Larry returned home.
According to the Sturgis Journal s April 8, 1961, edition, they were in a rusty boat that recently had been repaired. The boat sprang a leak and sank. Subsequent Journal stories revealed the boat had capsized.

Sturgis Journal Winter Adventure takes place 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Camp Fort Hill, 21710 N. Everson Drive in Sturgis.
Admission is free, although donations will be accepted to offset expenses.
Wagon rides, camp fires, games and hiking will be available, as well as hot chocolate, doughnuts and s’mores near the pavilion.
Meals are not offered, due to pandemic restrictions. Social distancing rules apply on the premises.
The event is described by camp personnel as “a wholesome family event that aims to get the community out to camp during the winter.“
Camp Fort Hill was established in 1928 for the youth of the community in St. Joseph County.
