camile, i thought of you in mind when i thought of this question. should the government be running roads. shouldn t they be private and we would have to worry about potholes. you are absolutely right. if folks were paying for the services they were getting you would see the services improve. if we raise taxes. what is going to end up happening, people are going to pay heck a lot of more of the poorly maintained roads. on private roads? if you privatize there is a profit motive and all kinds of unsafe conditions. [ laughter ] because they are not, exactly. we would have that all the time. profit motive. it s consumers, right? we have wall marts. we have lousy roads with the government because no competition. we would have worse roads.
