Queen of the South s American fanbase was treated to the fourth season in 2019 on USA Network and then around a year later, the series was released globally on Netflix. Season five started filming in March 2020 but due to the coronavirus pandemic, shooting soon had to come to a halt. Filming resumed though and is now around midway through creating the new episodes, according to producer David T Friendly who took to Twitter to make this announcement.

Queen of the South s cast has frequently changed over the first four seasons with very few characters remaining throughout. The only two to have appeared from the very beginning are Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) and her sicario Pote Galvez (Hemky Madera). While one is rarely seen without the other now, Pote was initially a threat to Teresa in the USA Network series.

Jon-Michael Ecker is probably best known for his part as Guero Davilas in USA Network s Queen of the South. He is the man Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) falls madly in love with but also gets her involved with the Vargas Cartel, which in turn leads to her running for her life and eventually starting up her own illicit business. While he had a whirlwind romance with Teresa in the drama, actor Ecker has a different love in his life when he returns home from set.

Queen of the South follows Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga), a woman who has struggled from a poor money changer to now running her own drug cartel. As the flash-forwards have shown, Teresa will become one of the most successful dealers in the world but her story will not have a happily ever after. As she continues to rise to the top, the USA Network drama is beginning to inch closer to this future.
