After being closed for nearly four years, the Cameron Street Bridge opened to traffic Monday afternoon.
The two-lane, $10.5 million concrete bridge replaces the single-lane, wood-truss bridge which served the city from 1931 to 2005. The site has been used for a bridge across the Nechako River since 1916.
“This is a historic moment,” Mayor Dan Rogers said. “It’s wonderful that we are here to open this and provide a critical link for industry and residents.”
Approximately 40 people attended the official opening of the bridge at 10 a.m. on Monday. Traffic began flowing across the bridge shortly after noon.
The bridge reopening will help the city’s industries become more competitive and energy-efficient, he said.
