crashed through their apartment. a tree fell on a car killing someone in that vehicle. a surfer in florida died and deaths reported in north carolina. doug is with us. we are told it s going to get worse. is that the case? yeah. right now, we are seeing the worst roll in here, the next six to nine hours as far as the strong storms. you are not going to see a lot of lightning or hear a lot of thunder. what you see are the strong rain bands come through. the winds increase very, very quickly. you go from ten to 20 to 30 miles an hour then the 80-mile-an-hour wind gusts. we will continue to see them throughout the evening. let s see what the latest is with the radar. right now, right along the i-95 corridor, all you see is the yellows. earlier, it was the greens. now the yellow. it s where the moderate rain is. the orange and red is the heavier rain. the red and orange make it through louden downty. this is one band that has a lot of rain associated with it. then more bandin
tonight we wait, watch and wonder what irene will do next. from virginia, to maryland and d.c., what you need to know. our coverage starts now. we begin with breaking news about hurricane irene tonight. much of the d.c. area is now under a tropical storm watch, the coastline under a hurricane watch. thanks for joining us tonight. i m shawn yancy. and i m brian bolter. also new tonight the martin luther king, jr. memorial dedication postponed indefinitely. event was expected to draw a quarter million people into the district. organizers say the hurricane left them no choice. meanwhile millions are bracing for the storm and cities and power companies are preparing their disaster plan. the hurricane s strength and path changes by the hour and the fox 5 storm force all over it. fox 5 s sue palka starts us off with the very latest data. there were dramatic developments overnight when we saw the track shift much closer to the coast and a lot of the models jumped on it. in
government of the bahamas is discontinued all of the warnings and it s 575 miles south of kay cape hatteras and that continues to move at 13 miles per hour. we re glad to see that beginning of a turn and again, still a category 3 and still looking like it s going to have the winds of 120 miles per hour, parallel to the coast and yet goes into the virginia beach, possibly outer bangs area. and that is early on saturday and this is where we re concerned. there is no change since the early-morning thinking that is a category 2 hurricane at ocean city on sunday morning with winds of $100 miles per hour. it 100 miles an hour and it s been a long time since we have had a storm of that strength here and let s get you closer, it s going to be on the coast line and that would have a huge impact, we re talking hurricane-force winds, 100 miles an hour winds out of the question and if that continues on up the coast and into western sections of long island and still a tropical storm as
