T K Harty slaying highlights Community Council on Aging fundraiser

A discussion over dinner about an old Athens murder case is the basis for a July fundraising event to benefit the Athens Community Council on Aging. The dinner is highlighted by an “exclusive panel discussion” of the infamous murder of Athens businessman T.K. Harty. The slaying revolved around a series of events in 1977 at the current location of the Council on Aging on Hoyt Street. Back in the 70s, the area was a popular hangout with taverns and restaurants such as The Station, located in the former Southern Railway depot on Hoyt Street. It was in that colorful decade when young businessman T.K. Harty, owner of T.K. Harty’s Saloon, became what police said was the target of vengeance by another tavern owner, John Mooney of Somebody’s Pizza.

Classic City Crime podcast turns to Elijah Wood shooting, T K Harty

It’s already been a very busy year for Cameron Jay, creator and producer of the “Classic City Crime” podcast, and the 26-year-old Jay has no immediate plans to slow down.  Jay, who last year introduced his podcast with a 25-episode series on the 2001 unsolved murder of UGA law student Tara Baker, has more recently utilized his podcast to delve into the 1977 murder of Athens bar owner T.K. Harty and the March shooting death of Oconee County resident Elijah Wood while he worked an overnight shift at the RaceTrac on U.S. 441 in Watkinsville.  With the assistance of a local attorney, Jay has also been able to find office space in town, and he has gone back to college, enrolling at West Georgia University in Carrollton to study criminology.

Athens Classic City Crime podcast releases spring miniseries | Culture

Athens true crime podcast “Classic City Crime” is in the midst of covering the solved murder case of Athenian business man and saloon owner, T. K. Harty, and will soon begin airing its second season. During the show’s first season, Classic City Crime host and producer Cameron Harrelson, also known as Cameron Jay, extensively covered the unsolved murder of University of Georgia law student Tara Baker. Harrelson spent 24 lengthy episodes exploring the Baker case, from June 2020 to January 2021. Yet he expanded beyond the evidence to talk about Baker.  “The ability to really get to know the victim as a person is something that means a lot, and that I think a lot of investigators and journalists get wrong,” Harrelson said. “We covered a lot of ground with the Tara [Baker] case because I spent so much time with her family and getting to know her.”
