It began popularity in 1919 after the war in britain and then soon in the United States. Poppies began being sold as remembrance to raise funds for wounded veterans. When you come into the National World war i museum and memorial, as you mentioned, theres a bridge that takes you into the main galleries under which this glass bridge is a beautiful field of poppies, red poppies of flanders field. There are 9,000 blooms, each representing 1,000 combatant deaths. Its really an architectural masterpiece, i think, of the museum, very striking for visitors.
