Original Defender will be built again by Land Rover Classic Production run limited to 25 units only Will come with off-road upgrades and Camel Trophy livery. The Camel Trophy took place annually from 1980 to 1998. With the exception of the inaugural event, teams raced factory-supplied, modified Land Rover models across some of the harshest terrain in the world, stopping to take part in special tasks including timed rally stages, winching trials and orienteering.

None of them will be in the U.S. Land Rover s Classic Division has released a limited run of 25 of the retro Defender Works V8 Trophy shown here, based on the now defunct old-school Defender. Among those produced will be both two-door (90) and four-door (110) models, all in the Eastnor Yellow color reminiscent of Camel Trophy entries of the 1980s and 1990s. Not surprisingly, this old-school SUV won t be sold in the U.S.; Defender fans here will have to shop the 2021 Land Rover Defender instead.

Not that any of us ever partook in the annual expeditionary competition when it ran between 1980 and 1998, but we just can t get enough weird fake nostalgia for this wild off-road competition that came to be known as the Olympics of 4x4. The Germans have a word for this untargeted faux-nostalgia sehnsucht. The Brits have no such word, but it appears Land Rover is reckoning with the absence of the Camel Trophy just as wistfully as we are. In celebration of that bygone 4x4 competition, Land Rover Classic revealed a limited edition of the classic Defender that hearkens back to when the slab-sided truck was used more as a tool and agrarian device than a semi-posh inner-city runabout or country estate shuttle.
