Tough year at the Bud
As COVID-19 walloped the entertainment industry in 2020, dozens of concerts and events planned for Budweiser Gardens were cancelled, half the full-time staff were laid off, and the facility saw its first loss, totalling nearly $650,000. The city’s cut of ticket revenue was barely more than $17,000. Another $50,000 the minimum payment as a cut of operational income also was received. City staff said a reserve fund will help with this year’s debt payment.
New core-area grants endorsed
Council’s planning committee unanimously endorsed three new grants for downtown and Old East businesses as part of a community improvement plan for the core area. That includes a program to help fund safety upgrades, up to 50 per cent or $10,000, and a separate grant to help lower the cost of signage. A third program will eliminate fees for sidewalk patios.

A prominent London developer is making a key change in its bid to redevelop heritage properties as part of a $245-million twin tower on the former Camden Terrace site.
Old Oak, which took over the project in 2019, now wants to rebuild the face of the former Camden Terrace site on Talbot Street using materials saved, brick by brick, when the old Victorian rowhouse came down on the outside of the building, rather than in the lobby as originally proposed.
