銀河系中心發現巨型新恆星亮度會驟變 | 人馬座

研究人員根據歐洲南方天文台（ESO）的可見光和紅外巡天望遠鏡變星調查項目（VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey，簡稱VVV）多年收集的數據，發現了這顆奇異的恆星。這顆恆星距離地球2.5萬多光年，質量是太陽的大約百倍，位於靠近銀河系中心的人馬座（Sagittarius）。科學家把亮度呈現周期性變化的星體稱為變星。但是這顆恆星亮度的變化規律與任何已知的變星都不一樣。科學家把未知的變星類型稱為WIT（這是什麼，what is this）天體，因此將此星編號為VVV-WIT-08。研究者之一劍橋大學天文學研究所的史密斯（Leigh Smith）說：「 2012年初亮度開始降低，到了4月份基本上看不見了，隨後的100天里亮度逐漸恢復。」由於VVV-WIT-08所處的區域靠近銀河系中心，是個大量恆星聚集的區域，研究人員認為可能有一個未知的天體正好運動到它的前面把它擋住了。�
