This was the first British royal funeral for the internet age. The level of grooming and the height of many of the women’s heels was notable – there was not a single inappropriate outfit, and one was aware that many of those present would have dressed for the closest scrutiny of the cameras.
If anyone understands the significance of mourning dress, it’s the royal family. And wearing black - a colour traditionally worn ever since Queen Victoria wore it following her husband Albert’s death in 1861 - means that deeply significant jewellery can be seen with piercing clarity.

A blazing blue sky, a thousand year old castle, impeccable pageantry and a hearse fashioned from the Duke of Edinburgh’s favourite brand of car, a Land Rover, The Queen can console herself with the knowledge that this was the funeral her beloved husband of 73 years wanted.
Thanks to social distancing rules, she sat alone in her pew, a small, solitary figure. However she was surrounded by family. Even though relations between certain members have been fractured during the past few months, for now, they presented a united front in their black mourning, a reminder that as well as being worn as a token of respect, mourning binds those present and focuses their minds on what matters �
