Over 100 single-caretaker households in Cambridge will be selected to receive no-strings-attached monthly payments of $500 as part of an 18-month pilot program starting this August, announced Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui on Thursday.
Cambridge is the second city in the state to have no-strings-attached payments available to its most vulnerable families in an effort to address a growing economic divide. In November, Chelsea began giving 2,000 low-income families $200 to $400 a month, according to a Boston Globe report.
The payments are being made through the Cambridge RISE (Recurring Income for Success and Empowerment) Project. The program’s first measure, the Guaranteed Income Pilot Initiative, will run in partnership with the Cambridge Community Foundation, Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee, Just-A-Start and the Cambridge Housing Authority.
