A five-alarm fire broke out in Unit 3N of the Twin Parks North West complex in the Bronx shortly before 11am Sunday. A family of nine lived in the unit. The father rescued his child from her burning bed.
New York authorities are investigating a possible "maintenance issue" with a door that failed to close when devastating fire erupted in a Bronx apartment building yesterday, killing 17 people, including eight children.
Pope Francis offered his condolences Monday to the 17 victims, nine of them children of the apartment fire in the Bronx in a telegram sent to New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
Fire experts said the design of a nearly 50-year-old building and its older fire safety features likely contributed to spreading of smoke, which caused all 17 of the fatalities. Officials say dozens were injured.
