To more typical summer mid atlantic july, august stuff. This morning watching some showers which passed overnight into pennsylvania. A few of them slipped into northern maryland. There was just enough moisture left over to cause some fog to form especially in hagerstown, cumberland. Weve seen visibilities now down to zero. Hagerstown better at one and a quarter. Warrenton down a half mile along with luray and quarter mile in petersburg, West Virginia. A couple of spots where fog is an issue. No jackets for most now with temps in the 50s and 60s. No 40s out there but 55 in luray. Thats a little bit on the chilly side. La plata 61. 59 for frederick and gaithersburg. Weve got 65 in Prince Frederick according to ej this morning and hyattsville getting a report of 59 there. So today little muggier. Spotty shower or storm this afternoon. Temps range from 85 in cumberland to 82 in hagerstown to 87 here in the district. Lets bring monika in now with timesaver traffic. Its the bewitching hour o
Remembered most reported by given to Star Scientific ceo, the gifts including a 55,000 rolex watch, 15,000 of ricateng for the mcdonnells daughters wedding and shopping, shopping, shopping for the first lady. More than 10,000 worth from oscar de la renta, 5,000 police at loui vitton. We just learned Jonnie Williams has taken the stand in the trial. Peggy will be in there, watch the testimony and have more coming your way on wusa9 news at 6 00. In the meantime weve brought in defense attorney mark shamel. Today is just day three of what they expect to be a month long trial and already the star witness for the prosecution is on the stand. Youre surprised. I am. Why would they do that . During this last 25 years in the United States government. These last 25 years it has become part and parcel of every diplomats dna to appreciate that the democratic character of governments that we partner with affects their International Posture and policies as well and our military establishment and intelligence agencies i think increasingly understand that and increasingly weave that into their engagements with their partners as well but its not a universally hello view yet but an emerging and broking view so i think we will continuing in this direction at least another 25 years and hopefully have a few more successes to talk about when we meet 25 years from now. Thanks very much, tom. I am going to open the floor to questions. I do ask that you keep the, your questions to actual questions. Weve had some very long and very deta
Possibilities. My own office at the state department has had a pretty consistent budget thanks to the congress to support Civil Society actors in a variety of countries and, of course, the National Endowment for democracy remains the pree moore institution in the world premier institution in the world for targeting assistance to democrats usually many tough places. So they know they have support from the outside community, from the International Community. So let me mention a couple of things just to wind up this opening scene setter. One is that i think we in the United States need to appreciate the Important Role that congress plays. While we disparage its occasional polarization and inability to resolve certain major things, the congress has been a major contributor to american democracy programming in a lot of ways. Not least in the creation of my part of the state department. You know, the bureau for democracy, human rights and labor was created 30 years ago over the objections of
