SOUTH BERWICK, Maine The South Berwick Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to enact a new emergency moratorium on medical marijuana retail stores, temporarily halting any further expansion of the rapidly growing industry.
The moratorium is set to expire in 180 days, giving the town time to gather information and present it to the Planning Board for any potential adjustments to the ordinances that regulate cannabis businesses in town.
The councilors set a timeline for their potential amendments, but they didn t signal what exactly those amendments will look like.
The current ordinance that outlines the rules for medical marijuana retail stores to operate in certain zoning districts in South Berwick was approved by the town on Jan. 14, 2020. Some businesses are already operating under that ordinance, but the moratorium hits pause on any pending applications for building permits, certificates of occupancy, site plans, conditional uses, or any other required
