Travares Tillman spent his first year at Michigan State as a senior defensive assistant, meaning he wasn’t an on-field coach.
After the season was over, Tillman returned to his family home in Colorado and, eager for hands-on work, he put together a clinic for his son’s teammates. About a day later, he learned there was an opening on Mel Tucker’s staff and Tillman is now Michigan State’s new cornerbacks coach.

Michigan State coach Mel Tucker decided to promote from within to fill the open position on his staff.
Travares Tillman on Thursday was named the team’s new cornerbacks coach, filling a spot created when safeties coach Mike Tressel left to become the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati. Harlon Barnett, who coached cornerbacks this season, is now the secondary coach. Tillman is the first coaching hire Tucker made since his original staff was put together before the 2020 season.
