Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation this week that allows the state to spend $536 million dollars on wildfire prevention this year, but will it be enough? CalMatters’ Emily Hoeven joins Elizabeth and Nicole to talk about what some critics are calling a bandaid over a gaping wound. They’ll also discuss the state’s inability to get relief money into the hands of childcare providers and why the death of a bill to ban fracking may actually be good news for Gov. Newsom.

THE BUZZ THE ‘TRUMP-NESIA’ STRATEGY? The embattled California Republican Party has some heavy lifting ahead while it remains laser-focused on one big political goal: the recall of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
And all that may mean putting Donald Trump in the rear view mirror as quickly as possible.
State GOP chair Jessica Millan Patterson for weeks has tweeted and issued statements about Newsom and his failures. But Trump’s name has never been uttered, his failings including pushing conspiracies of election fraud never addressed, and reporters’ questions on those key party issues unanswered. The party’s official line has been to decry the violent breaching of the U.S. Capitol, but to do so while omitting Trump and his role from the discussion.

THE BUZZ: A Becerra brawl could be brewing on Capitol Hill.
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra
made the virtual Senate rounds on Wednesday as he tried out to become the next Health and Human Services secretary.
The reviews from his side of the aisle were unsurprisingly glowing. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) called Becerra “the right pick to lead the fight” against coronavirus, as did Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.); Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) praised the Californian for having “the right priorities & experience”; and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer lauded Becerra as part of a “deeply qualified and experie
