The embattled California Republican Party has some heavy lifting ahead while it remains laser-focused on one big political goal: the recall of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. And all that may mean putting Donald Trump in the rear view mirror as quickly as possible. State GOP chair Jessica Millan Patterson for weeks has tweeted and issued statements about Newsom and his failures. But Trump’s name has never been uttered, his failings including pushing conspiracies of election fraud never addressed, and reporters’ questions on those key party issues unanswered. The party’s official line has been to decry the violent breaching of the U.S. Capitol, but to do so while omitting Trump and his role from the discussion.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra made the virtual Senate rounds on Wednesday as he tried out to become the next Health and Human Services secretary.
