The New Zealand rowing squad has enjoyed a successful opening day at the Tokyo Olympics with all bar one directly qualifying for the quarter or semi-finals. Emma Twigg and Jordan Parry both comfortably advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective single sculls events with Twigg winning her heat and Parry finishing second in his. Parry gained selection ahead of two time Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale. Twigg told Sky Sport she was pleased to simply be back racing after a year and a half away. It s been a long time coming and it was certainly a bit off a lung buster. certainly a few nerves as the Olympics is a special event but I guess it s a good thing that we experience nerves because you know it means something, she said.

New Zealand canoe slalom athlete looking forward to Olympic debut Xinhua 21 Jul 2021, 11:44 GMT+10 TOKYO, July 21 (Xinhua) New Zealand canoe slalom Callum Gilbert is in Tokyo and training harder than ever as he prepares for the biggest competition of his life. Callum competes in the K1 and is one-half of the New Zealand Canoe Slalom team, alongside Rio 2016 silver medallist Luuka Jones. The men s K1 competition begins on July 28th. The 25-year-old was one of the first New Zealand athletes to arrive in Japan, where he s been spending as much time as possible at the Kasai Canoe Slalom Centre, training and familiarizing himself with the course ahead of the competition.
