thank you. now back to the developing news out of london this morning. this is a situation with a virgin atlantic flight having to go back to gatwick airport to make what is called a landing here a nonstandard landing after some problems with the landing gear. that flight was headed to las vegas, actually. what you re looking at is a flight tracker here. you see in that highlighted neon green the kind of circle formation there. that is that particular flight that has to circle as they re trying to make that landing with a problem. so something we re watching here as virgin flake is saying it has to make that nonstandard landing at gatwick. we don t have conformation that was the plane. but that s our understanding with an issue a technical issue with one of the landing gears. virgin atlantic said we re returning back to gatwick. we want to bring in here one of
that s why warren gets that interest but hillary clinton gets preponderance of the party. the brand name clinton is strong and she s proven herself. all right. what an interesting start to 2015 will be when the announcements come in. you ll be watching as will we. thank you. thank you. to get you updated on the developing news out of london we re following. a virgin atlantic flight is returning. the plane is getting ready to implement a nonstandard landing. the flight was heading to las vegas. msnbc continues to follow this and bring you any developments as they become available. after the break take you inside north korea and an author and journalist who went undercover to teach. the students didn t know what
and there s no indication the extension part had a problem. it sounds like when they retracted it one of the gear itself or one of the doors wouldn t properly retract and close. and so that reason they elected to make a prudent choice to come back and land. it seems specific when they re calling a nonstart landing. and i can imagine they re going about this with an abundance of caution and not calling it an emergency landing. would that be the case? absolutely. it s not an emergency. it s abnormal. the airplane was intended to have the gear retract normally. these are things that pilots train for and we have experienced over the many years of flying. when you have an ab nornormality there s a process. if you have the time here there s probably a discussion with the maintenance facility and maintenance coordinators to get their opinion in.
our flight analyst john cox msnbc news analyst agent. what can you tell us what we know. they re having problems with the landing gear. you re not flying. you re coming back and calling it nonstandard landing. i think there would be prudent if the landing gear did not retract properly or if there was a problem with the hydraulic system. the idea they re going to continue to las vegas is not going to happen. out of an abundance of caution. they end up they need to reduce the weight of the airport down to the landing weight. it may take some time. depending on the type of aircraft. they can burn it down. they will probably declare a request for the emergency equipment to standby and this is all being done as a precaution. it s the routine way that we handle what i would call abnormalities in flight. there are redoesn t systems to get the landing gear extending
that will be made by specially maintenance personnel and determine what the best course of action to deal with the passengers. let me ask you this, john. in the last few seconds we have i think the passengers on the plane knowing the unfortunate things that happened in flights and other planes do they know what is happening. the pilot telling them we have a landing gear problem and we re making a nonstandard landing? i can imagine virgin atlantic might have monitors people can watch the news. what is pilot telling the passengers before they land it? the times i ve had to make an abnormal landing, the thing you tell the passengers is the truth. ladies and gentlemen, we ve had a problem. one of the landing gear. we re going to return back and make a landing in london. you may see a lot of equipment and trucks around the airport. this is being done as a precaution. we don t anticipate there s going to be any problem. and you always level with the passengers. you tell them the truth so
