CA: Commissioner Lara Announces Appointments to the WCIRB Governing Committee

04/14/21 WorkersCompensation.com Sacramento, CA (WorkersCompensation.com) - Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara today announced two reappointments to the California Workers Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau s (WCIRB) Governing Committee. “I am very pleased to announce my appointment of Mitch Steiger and Diana Rich to the WCIRB Governing Committee for another two-year term,” said Commissioner Lara. “Their knowledge and expertise in workers compensation insurance has been and will continue to be a tremendous asset to the work of the Committee.” The WCIRB Governing Committee sets policy, oversees WCIRB management, and reviews all issues involving pure premium rates, classifications, rating plans, rating systems, manual rules and policy, and endorsement forms. The WCIRB is a private organization licensed by the Department of Insurance for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and compiling rating data, with funding coming from assessments of its insurance company members

Hospital Charges Rise Despite Fewer Visits to Emergency Rooms Auto casualty claimants are avoiding hospital emergency rooms during the COVID-19 pandemic but are generating increased hospital charges anyway, according to a new report by Mitchell, a San Diego-based claims administrator. “Anecdotally, we have heard that some people have been avoiding going to the emergency room during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Mitchell’s data confirms those narratives,” Mitchell says in the Dec. 3 report. The analysis of third-party claims says Mitchell saw a 32% reduction in total charges associated with emergency room visits from January through June 2020 compared to the same period in 2018 and 2019. At the same time, inpatient stays increased 157% in the same time frame.
