The American Civil Liberties Union detailed in a new report the ways sheriff’s departments in eight counties of California’s San Joaquin Valley – home to nearly a million immigrants – have “circumvented” the state’s sanctuary laws meant to protect California immigrants.
A group of residents and local advocates will gather on Wednesday to protest the voluntary transfer of convicted immigrants by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office to federal immigration officials.
This practice has violated two California laws, endangers the safety and privacy of local immigrant communities, and facilitates location tracking by police.
