With the Salt Fire north of Redding and the massive Lava Fire burning farther north in Siskiyou County, officials are telling drivers to expect delays on Interstate 5 for the Fourth of July weekend.
The California Department of Transportation on Thursday closed I-5 north at the Fawndale exit, 10 miles north of Redding for about two hours to assist crews with firefighting operations on the Salt Fire.
But even after it reopened, Caltrans officials were encouraging people to not travel the freeway north of Redding if possible.
“The situation is very fluid up there, so motorists should try to stay out of that area if possible. We know it’s difficult with the Fourth of July travel weekend upon us right now,” Caltrans spokesman Chris Woodward said.
