How the California Coastal Commission is hurting Californian home buyers and renters January 12, 2021 I By CAROL PARK The private vs. public beach debate is often characterized as debate on social justice. The logic is that blocked public beach access disproportionally hurts the poor who cannot afford to live in beachfront homes. In California, this is where the heroic California Coastal Commission enters: to protect the rights of such disadvantaged groups against the rich and evil coastal homeowners. Except, multiple studies by academics have shown that the regulatory actions of the California Coastal Commission end up further alienating of the groups they intend to protect.

Local landlords sue Santa Monica Dec. 21, 2020 at 6:00 am File photo Dozens of local landlords and property managers are suing the City of Santa Monica in hopes of overturning a ban on short-term rentals throughout the city. “Petitioners are 32 entities with a vested interest in the right to offer flexible lease terms and furnished apartments,” according to the lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles County Superior on Monday. The complaint begins by detailing a multi-year process undertaken by the city’s planning department to study a new rent-term measure. A total of 16 Planning Commission and City Council meetings were held throughout the process, according to the lawsuit. “In the course of that work, a variety of competing concerns were raised, including the need for flexible approaches to short and medium term rental options designed to serve the interests of Santa Monica tenants and landlords.”

Bolinas parking rules will expand, after first shot had little effect

Jump to navigation David Briggs Overnight parking for oversized vehicles has been banned in parts of Bolinas since the spring, but visitation has increased since then, and the rules aren’t doing enough. The county will expand the restriction in January.   By  12/16/2020 Downtown parking rules in Bolinas will tighten in 2021, after the county found that a first phase of regulations put in place this spring did not improve turnover. In January, the prohibition of overnight parking by oversized vehicles will expand from one side of the downtown streets to both sides.  The rules, which were drafted by the county and the Bolinas Community Public Utility District, addressed notorious parking congestion and abided by provisions of the California Coastal Act that protect public access to the beach.
