CALEDONIA â The Caledonia Village Board on Monday night gave permission, on a 5-2 vote, to the village Police Department to pursue a federal grant to hire two additional sworn officers, even while the villageâs police chief wants to expand the department by five officers in the near future.
The Caledonia Police Department has been understaffed for a while, according to department leaders. The department is currently staffed with 35 sworn personnel: a chief, deputy chief, three lieutenants, five sergeants, three detectives, one K-9 handler and 21 patrol officers. The staff was increased by one in 2020 and another in 2021.

Police Chief Christopher Botsch said Monday night that the department should be somewhere between 40 and 45 sworn personnel, based on metrics to evaluate sworn law enforcement personnel for an agency.

McManus
Incumbent David Prott, who has been Caledonia Town Board supervisor and Caledonia Village Board trustee in the past, received 1,616 votes Tuesday. Challenger Holly McManus received 2,063 votes, according to unofficial Racine County election data.
Four seats were up for election this April in Caledonia on Tuesday. Village President James Dobbs ran uncontested for re-election. Trustee No. 1 Thomas Weatherston and Trustee No. 3 Kevin Wanggaard also ran unopposed for re-election.
McManus, a police detective with the City of St. Francis in Milwaukee County, said she is very excited to serve the Caledonia community.

The two men, Daniel R. Williams and Hung N. Tran, had been scheduled be released from civil commitment and move into a Saratoga Drive residence on April 6. The residence is immediately east of the family-friendly campground that encompasses more than 200 acres at 8425 Highway 38. Both men have a history of sexual violence against children.
The village challenged the placements, after the Village Board voted unanimously that the location was âunacceptable for several reasons including its proximity to a high number of children.â Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave was also opposed to the placement.
