Ella Overstreet, the author s great-great-grandmother, was wife of Henry Griffith Overstreet, who served three terms in the Kentucky legislature despite switching parties, from Republican to Democratic, to protest the conviction of Republicans in the 1900 assassination of a newly named Democratic governor of Kentucky, William Goebel. Elizabeth Overstreet Field, great-great-granddaughter of Henry and Ella Overstreet, sees a lesson in this act of moral conscience for today s Republican officeholders.
