Dame Fiona Caldicott tribute
A tribute to Dame Fiona Caldicott, the first National Data Guardian, whose work over many years leaves a lasting legacy for patients and service users.

It is with great sadness that we learned today of the death of Dame Fiona Caldicott.
As members of the team who supported Dame Fiona in her work as National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care (NDG), we are full of sorrow at losing our inspirational colleague. She led us with unswerving integrity, modesty and a commitment to doing her best for patients and service users. Her name is well known across our sector and beyond, but we had the added privilege of knowing her personally and holding dear the thoughtful, compassionate person behind the public profile.
The National Data Guardian has published draft guidance on the appointment of guardians in health and social care organisations with a call for feedback.
It follows a public consultation on the Caldicott Principles and roles of guardians, which led to a proposal to expand the categories of organisations expected to have a guardian. The announcement said the proposal attracted strong support.
A key point of the draft guidance focuses on whether an organisation should appoint a guardian. It says the role should be applied to public bodies exercising functions that relate to the health service, adult social care or adult carer support in England and which handle confidential information about patients and service users.
National Data Guardian invites feedback on draft Caldicott Guardian guidance
The NDG is inviting people to comment on draft guidance that, when implemented, will mean more areas of health and adult social care should have a Caldicott Guardian

Later this year, the National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care will be issuing guidance that, when implemented, will mean more areas of the health and adult social care system should have a Caldicott Guardian than have currently been advised to have one.
In preparation for this, we are welcoming feedback on the first draft of this guidance to ensure that it is clear and relevant to all of those it addresses.

Earlier this week, Dame Fiona Caldicott published the outcomes from a public consultation that she ran to seek views on her intention to revise the existing seven Caldicott Principles.
The consultation response resulted in an expanded and revised set of eight Caldicott Principles, as well as a commitment to issue guidance about Caldicott Guardians in 2021.
WHY IT MATTERS
First introduced in 1997, the Caldicott Principles are guidelines applied across the field of health and social care information governance to ensure that people s data is kept safe and used ethically.
Commissioned by the Chief Medical Officer of England, the focus of the report was to review how patient information is used in the NHS.
