Seattle s Parks and Recreation (SPR) announced Wednesday it officially reopened Capitol Hill s Cal Anderson Park to the public after a closure of nearly six months.
Following a homeless encampment sweep last Friday that went against guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and resulted in 24 arrests, SPR said it removed 100 tons of debris such as pallets and furniture from the park and did the necessary maintenance services to allow for reopening.
Now, the city says it is hoping to create a safe and welcoming environment in the park while also including new signage that says NO CAMPING. Other signs offer hygiene and shelter resources for those experiencing homelessness.

Going against Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, the City of Seattle posted notice Monday that it intends to clear homeless encampments in Cal Anderson Park which has been temporarily closed since June 30 starting Wednesday morning. Materials in this area are an obstruction of the intended use of this property, are in a hazardous location or present a hazard, read the notice posted around the park Monday. This is not an authorized area for storage or shelter.
The scheduled sweep was meant to start at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning as posted on the notice. While the police made their presence known with a caravan of vehicles circling the park earlier in the morning, there have been no city employees in the park as of 10 a.m.
