A local woman says she plans to file a complaint with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for alleged mistreatment of her granddaughter inside the jail after the teen and a guard were involved in a fight Tuesday. However, a sheriff’s office spokesperson said an internal investigation is being done to determine if assault charges should be placed against the inmate.  June Murphy said she was told her granddaughter, 18-year-old Tania Murphy, was roughed up by detention officers Tuesday night after being ordered into lockdown at the county jail on Alcovy Road.

Two killed in head-on collision in Newton County COVINGTON, Ga. Two people were killed recently when the vehicles they were driving struck each other head-on in southwest Newton County. Coile Anderson, 82, of Conyers, and Tracy Champion, 51, of Sparta, Georgia, were killed in the two-vehicle crash on Georgia Hwy. 212 at Coldwater Drive Friday, Jan. 22, said Caitlin Jett, spokeswoman for the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. Anderson was driving his vehicle southbound on Hwy. 212 when it crossed into the northbound lane and struck a vehicle driven by Champion between the hours of 10:55 and 11:03 a.m., Jett said. Following impact, both vehicles came to an uncontrollable halt in a ditch off Hwy. 212, Jett said.

Helicopter, K-9s joined in search for missing Newton boy found safe COVINGTON, Ga. A boy was found safe late Friday about four hours after going missing in eastern Newton and a search that included a state helicopter, K-9 units from neighboring counties and the county sheriff s office and firefighters. The 11-year-old reportedly went missing about 7:30 p.m. Friday from Ewing Drive and was reported to Newton County Sheriff s Office about 40 minutes later. Newton County deputies and a K-9 Unit, as well as two K-9 Units from bordering counties and the Newton County Fire Service, responded to the call, said sheriff s spokeswoman Caitlin Jett.
