CAIRO (WSIL) A new non-profit wants to preserve what s left of a once-booming southern Illinois community.
The Cairo Historical Preservation Project was formally created in April. The goal of the new non-profit is to raise money and interest to preserve historic landmarks.
Those structures include the Cairo Public Library, the Custom House, the Magnolia Manor, and Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church. They all exist on tourism dollars. Last year of course there was no tourism. Whatever we can try to do to try to keep these buildings going. All of these structures are over a hundred years old, said Jim Fredlund, Secretary of the Cairo Historical Preservation Project.

CAIRO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) Greater Cairo Public Library (GCPL) serves as a historical memory for the Egyptian capital in particular and Egypt in general and a chronicle that preserves national identity, said the library s director general Yasser Othman in a recent interview with Xinhua. GCPL was established on the model of the Historical Library of the City of Paris, to serve as a historical memory that brings together the capital s heritage and history, documents Cairo s architecture and philosophy and sheds light on prominent foreign figures who lived in Cairo, Othman pointed out.
