New plans unveiled for Cairngorms mountain resort

A new 25-year vision for the Cairngorm mountain resort has been set out, with key objectives including safeguarding the natural environment and sustainable year-round operations The plan has been published by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), which owns the site, and comes following widespread consultation with local community and business groups, public bodies and sporting and nature conservation organisations. It will act as a framework to help inform future development and support delivery of the key objectives. Dave MacLeod, HIE’s head of property and infrastructure, said the agency’s ultimate aim was to unlock Cairngorm’s full potential as both an environmental and economic asset for the area.

The blueprint includes 10 strategies to shape the development of the publicly-owned 3,500-acre estate, with hopes to bring mountain biking to the area. Highlands and Islands Entrpise hope their vision will enhance the reputation of Cairngorm as a “world-class mountain” that allows nature to thrive while providing more outdoor opportunities.

Sign Up New plans have been lodged to create the UK’s highest campervan site in the Cairngorm National Park. Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd (CMSL) has submitted a planning application to the Highland Council to turn one of its car parks into an overnight area for motorhomes. The application is for 66 bays for the recreational vehicles at the Coire na Ciste car park, which is around one and a half miles from the Cairngorm Mountain Base Station and funicular railway.

Cairngorm Mountain has had its best snow conditions in 10 years but is closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Some areas of the centre near Aviemore are believed to have had the deepest snow since the 1980s. Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd s board agreed unanimously to offer current pass holders their money back. The company said: We will communicate widely about our reopening plans once we have a clearer picture on when the current restrictions will be eased.
